Riding The Wave Of Creativity: Inspiring Waves
Last year in ceramics one I made a tea set, which was very hard to do as someone who had only just learned how to throw on the wheel. I really didn’t know what I was doing, I had no clue how to pull and handle or make a lid, I just guessed. This year I wanted to outdo myself and create an even bigger and better tea set. I wanted to show off my new glazing and carving skills, and how many pieces I could make. I really wanted to push myself even though everyone around me was worried about my time management. I stayed after school for hours, brought work home, and even came into study hall to work on my art show. I made my tea pot by throwing the base and lid on the wheel, then carving in my designs, then throwing and attaching my handle. I also sculpted a little handle for my tea pot lid. I then made my pitcher by throwing a cylinder-like form and throwing the lid, carving, and attaching a handle I made out of a slab. I also made a knob for my lid. Next thing I created was a sugar bowl. I made this by throwing the base and the lid, I then carved in my design, I also made a knob for the lid and pulled two handles. I then started to make all six of my plates by rolling out a slab and fitting them into a plate mold, there was a lot of cracking and a lot of restarting. I then carved and glazed into my plates to complete their look. Next I created my six tea cups by throwing my base on the wheel, carving waves and lines into each of them, and then pulling a handle and attaching it. Other than my art show last year I am heavily inspired by my winter swimming career, that I had recently taken a break from after ten years of swimming without breaks all year long. Researching y art show made me realize how much I miss swimming, and rekindled the love I once had for the sport. I am so excited to continue to practice other mediums in art as an IB art student next year as I continue to “Ride The Wave of Creativity”!
